The Risk Of Acquiring Mesothelioma Lung Cancer

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer which is rather rare and is caused by some malignant cells that are found in the body’s protective layer known as mesolithelium. The mesolithelium covers many of the body organs which are internally placed and it is made up of two layers of cells. The inner layer is in direct contact with the organ which it covers, while the other layer forms a sac-like covering outside the organ. In between the two layers of cells is a lubricating substance which allows for movement of the organ without friction. For example, the substance allows for the beating of the heart and the expansion and contraction of the lungs.
The mesolithelium buys a different name depending on the organ it covers. For example, the covering for most of the organs that are located in the abdominal cavity is known as peritoneum and pleura for the organs that are located within the chest cavity like the lungs. The covering layer or the mesothelium of the heart is known as pericardium. Mesothelioma occurs as a result of attack of the mesothelium by unwanted and cancerous particles like asbestos. Once the particles have attached themselves on the covering, the mesothelium becomes abnormal and the cells start dividing uncontrollably. If the condition is not detected well in advance, chances are that neighboring organs will be affected as well.
Mesothelioma lung cancer can start from the lungs, or it can spread from other organs and affect the lungs. The condition is relatively rare, but where it has been reported, it has been among people who work in factories that come into contact with asbestos, mostly in the USA. This does not mean that the only people at risk are those working with asbestos. It could affect anyone, anywhere. It has also been reported that it is more common among men than among women. As a person grows older, the risk factor of contracting mesothelioma lung cancer increases as well. But, it can affect you at any age.
The risk of acquiring mesothelioma lung cancer is aggravated if one works in an environment that has asbestos and also smokes. Asbestos are minerals that are manufactured for use in a number of industries for various purposes. They occur as strong but flexible fibers that can be separated into small threads. The resulting products are used in the manufacture of cement, brake linings, textiles and insulation products. During the manufacturing process, it is very simple to inhale the small particles. The risk is compounded in smokers because the lining of the lungs is already tampered with by smoke particles. As such, it is simple for the asbestos to find their way into the lungs hence causing the cancer.

Lung Cancer, like all forms of cancer, is a terrible disease. It leaves its victims in so much pain and throws away their quality of life. It is caused through a variety of ways, the most well loved one being tobacco smoking. Not surprising, considering the vast amount of people across the world who smoke. Less commonly known causes include exposure to petroleum gases you tend to inhale when at a filling station, exposure to asbestos and consistent exposure and/or inhalation of smog like that of being trapped in a gridlock rush hour.
A very rare form of lung tumors is mesothelioma. It affects a handful of people, for example in the United States, but its incidence rate is significantly growing, i.e. a lot more people than previously are being diagnosed with the malignant tumor. The cancer to a large degree can be caused by unprotected & prolonged exposure to asbestos. An outrageously high amount of the courageous HERO rescue workers who endangered their lives to fight the madness of 9-11 as it unfolded in New York, developed mesothelioma and other (somewhat) preventable types of lung cancer. A lot of the SAINT rescue workers, beloved by their families, friends communities and country, sadly already passed away in the near decade since the atrocity was cowardly committed by terrorists.
There is no known cure for it to date. It is a horrible monster befalls unassuming, everyday people and shatters entire families. Many families grieving the loss of their loved one(s) are left to pick up the pieces from the havoc wrecked by the nightmare. Since mesothelioma is so much of a rare disease, it’s very hard for those left behind to come to terms with the realities of it, i.e. why it had to happen; ‘If it’s so rare, why did it have to happen to me/us etc?’ I have had the chilling experience of witnessing a lady interact with group members of a mesothelioma forum, first asking everybody to keep her uncle in their prayers as he’s battling mesothelioma, then returning a few days after to announce that he had passed away. This was very disturbing, especially as I was amongst the people who sent her goodwill messages to console her when she first made the announcement.
Due to the fact that mesothelioma is more often than not developed through the exposure to asbestos, it can unfortunately present itself in a number of (potentially) hazardous situations, if proper care is not taken to observe and inspect the environment at home, school, work or many other places. In the United States, for example, there have been a growing number of incidents of official/authoritative negligence on part of school boards, employers, government ministries etc to ensure that respectively children, artisans, civil servants etc are protected from (potentially) perilous exposure to asbestos by protective means or even denial access.
The Mesothelioma & Asbestos Awareness Center reported “Those who’ve studied the potential hazard of asbestos caused by the collapse of the World Trade Center estimate that more than 110,000 people may have suffered serious exposure including 80,000 tower workers, 30,000 local residents, and 4,000 first responders. Deborah Reeve was the first 9/11 emergency responder to die of mesothelioma. Doctors agree that her exposure to asbestos was a result of her days spent working at the recovery site.”
By and large, many organisations and institutions tend to flout regulations and health & safety procedures stipulated by law or stick to them in a completely unacceptable manner. Thereby, people are place at risk of contracting the disease and/or those who have already been diagnosed with mesothelioma are left uncared for, unattended by institutions and unable to get the professional and highly competent support and help they require, in a legal capacity.

For those of you that have no thought what mesothelioma is; or at least knows that it’s a type of cancer but want to know more about it, this article on asbestos mesothelioma resource will attempt to inform you as much as possible. This disease may not be well loved but it certainly destroys the lives of people who have mesothelioma and his or her close friends and relatives.
Causes
To start, mesothelioma is caused by exposure to a mineral called asbestos. Fortunately, not many people are at risk of the hazardous asbestos compared to other toxic material. Even so, according to the AJRCCM 1.3 million people are still vulnerable to poisonous asbestos.
These are the people who are most susceptible to be exposed to asbestos and obtain either pleural mesothelioma or peritoneal mesothelioma:
• Workers in mines of asbestos extraction
• People who work in the trade industry
• Workers at shipyards
• Manufacturers of Asbestos products
• Workers in the construction industry
• Workers in heating industry
• Family and friends of all of the above
The depressing part of it all is that getting mesothelioma isn’t your fault, but because of negligence from the owners of these mines, shipyards, construction sites, etc. In the past these people have failed to implement safety measures and the consequences are being paid by everyone involved. The workers because of the illness and the owners because of all the compensation money they have to pay for every mesothelioma lawsuit they have had in the years.

Mesothelioma is a deadly and rare form of cancer that has developed from exposure to asbestos. The inhaling of the highly toxic asbestos is the major cause of mesothelioma. The ingested particles of asbestos develop the cancerous or malignant cells in the mesothelium. Mesothelium is the cell structure that covers and surrounds various internal organs.
Mesothelioma is classified into three forms: Pleural Mesothelioma, Peritoneal Mesothelioma, and Pericardial Mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma starts in tiny lumps in the membrane of pleura.
Abdominal pain, loss of weight and swelling in the abdominal region due to a buildup of fluid are the symptoms in peritoneal mesothelioma.
But, you should know that the most common diseases associated with asbestos start in a person’s lungs. Because of this, there are certain asbestos symptoms you can look for in a person to see if he or she is suffering from an asbestos lung disease.
Shortness of breath – Are you frequently running out of breath? Can’t you even go up one flight of stairs without panting or wheezing? Shortness of breath is frequently a symptom of asbestos illnesses.

This is because sudden weight loss often indicates that the disease may have already spread out to other parts of the body.
These are just some of the symptoms you should keep an eye out for if ever you have been exposed to asbestos in the past. Remember, but, that some asbestos symptoms only appear when the disease is in its advanced stages so just to be sure, try to get a regular check up.

New Mesothelioma Test – Showing Effectiveness for Pleural Mesothelioma Patients

Mesothelioma is an asbestos related cancer caused by exposure to asbestos over a long period of time. Symptoms for mesothelioma may not become apparent for decades after the initial exposure to asbestos. Thus it is usually not detected until the late stages after serious side effects start to present themselves.
What Are Some Of The Diagnosis Of Pleural Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma in general is extremely hard to diagnose since symptoms do not appear for a long time after initial asbestos exposure occurs. And in most cases pleural mesothelioma is often mistaken for influenza or pneumonia or other more common disease making it extremely hard to diagnose and treat.
What Are The Symptoms Of Pleural Mesothelioma?
The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are very non-specific which makes it very hard to diagnose at an early stage and treat appropriately. Other symptoms may not appear for decades after exposure to asbestos. Some of the symptoms include:
Abdominal swelling Anemia Acute pain in the abdominal region and chest area Coughing up blood Difficulty swallowing Fatigue Shortness of breath Persistent dry cough Weight loss What Is This New Test?
A new gene ratio test to help predict which pleural mesothelioma patients will benefit from multiple modes of therapy and surgical procedure was developed by researchers at the Birgham and Womens Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. This test has shown to be effective in predicting postsurgical outcome in pleural mesothelioma patient – this is indeed a very vital breakthrough in the diagnosis and treatment of mesothelioma.
How Is This Test Used?
The gene ratio test is used to analyze relative expression levels of four genes involved in malignant mesothelioma. The researchers believed that there was a need to develop a molecular test that could predict surgical outcome due to the lack of current means of assessing prognosis in determining which mesothelioma patient will benefit from surgery of trimodality therapy.
How Effective Is This Test?
According to the researchers trimodality treatment that includes chemotherapy and radiation with surgical resection leads to longer life expectancy than nonsurgical therapy in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. Although this treatment is effective in longer survival rate it is only beneficial to about 50 percent of malignant pleural mesothelioma patients which means the other 50 percent of patients may not benefit from this test. Overall this test is an effective new development in determining which patient will see an improved mesothelioma prognosis.
What Is The Survival Rate Of This Test?
The survival rate for patients that received trimodality therapy is currently around one to two years. But approximately 20 percent of patients survive for three to fifteen years. This significant increase in survival is certainly excellent news for patients who may be more genetically apt to benefits from this aggressive new treatment approach.
Due to the positive outcome of this test, researchers are pushing for this test to become a standard practice in diagnosing and plotting treatment for pleural mesothelioma patients.
How Reliable Is This Test?
According to researchers their test indicates that it can be performed on specimens obtained in a minimally invasive biopsy performed before major surgical intervention. The test also indicates that it can be used as a reliable source to help inform the clinical choice of whether to perform major surgery or trimodal therapies in addition to accurately predicting postsurgical outcome.
The new developments of drugs and treatment for pleural mesothelioma such as this give hope to those suffering from mesothelioma and their loved ones. It is with fantastic hope that these new tests will one day be 100 percent effective in treating this disease at all stages.

This is the most common of all the mesotheliomas and it generally occurs on one side of the chest. This mesothelioma represents about 75% of all the mesothelioma cases. There is a high misconception about this mesothelioma that this is a type of lung cancer but it is not. This is detected mostly in men between the ages of 60-80 and this happens to people exposed to asbestos.
The beginning of pleural mesothelioma can be judged by spotting small white nodules on the pleural surface. These nodules increase in size and also thicken and join together and then form a rind that covers the lungs and gets into the grooves of the pleura and the outer covering of the diaphragm. The tumor then spreads very quick attacking the chest walls and the ribs.
Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma:
Detection of pleural mesothelioma is not simple because symptoms of this disease are not very clear and these symptoms are attributed to ancient age or overwork. Pleural infusion is a major symptom that helps in the detection of this type of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma also affects the lymph nodes and the circulatory system. Shortness of breath and chest pain are also symptoms that help in the detection. Some of the other symptoms include dry cough, weight loss, night sweats and fatigue.
Diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma:
Pleural mesothelioma is detected by doctors by performing an X-ray. The other patients show no fluid. Large growths are noted in these patients. In the beginning, the fluid is free-flowing and is a similar symptom to that which happens in a heart failure. At a later stage, the effusion gets loculated and thus the fluid does not go. Tumors that are not related to pleura mesothelioma also grow in the pleura. These tumors start in some other parts of the body and then they spread to the different parts of the body. The lower lungs show more tumor masses than the upper lung and this is due to the factors that influence a person on how the asbestos fibers settle and affect the lungs after they have been inhaled. Hurt to the pleura is recognized by heaviness in breathing and pain in the chest. This includes fatigue as a symptom in the body. People know that they have pleura mesothelioma only in the last phase and then it is far from recovery. The type of non-pleural mesothelioma cancer that occurs is lung cancer. The other types are breast cancer, gastric cancer and ovarian cancer. Lymphoma is also a type of non-pleural mesothelioma cancer.
The amount of pleural fluids yields a positive diagnosis only in a few cases and biopsy can give a better percentage of result. Benign mesothelioma is the non-cancerous type of mesothelioma and is very rare. This mesothelioma can occur in the pleura or the peritoneum.
