Pleura mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs. This isn’t a main type of lung cancer; it is a cancer of the serous membranes.

The affected tissues line a number of organs within the center of the body, which includes the lungs. Even though pleura mesothelioma is the most common of type of the disease, it can affect the additional organs as well.

The stomach cellular lining, peritoneum, surrounding the heart, pericardium, and then can propagate to the lung area. While pleura mesothelioma is often referred to as asbestos lung cancer, it is incorrect. This particular cancer does not originate in the lungs but rather have metastasized to the lung.

Asbestosis is a type of asbestos lung condition that is in the lung area.

Unfortunately it is frequently mixed up with pleura mesothelioma.

This particular type of cancer, pleura mesothelioma, is brought on by asbestos breathing. The asbestos becomes imbedded in the lung lining, pleura, and over a lengthy period of time due to infection, can turn out to be cancerous growths. It can take as long as 20-50 years for the cancer malignancy to develop.

In unusual instances it has been associated with the breathing of other fibrous silicates, irradiation and thorotrast (intrapleural thorium dioxide). Most usually nevertheless, it is felt that asbestos fiber is the main cause.

The initial appearance is one of several tumor masses. The outside surface is generally much more affected than the visceral or inner area. The lower lobes of the lungs are usually the ones that are afflicted and it is believed that this is due to the law of gravity. The right lung is more frequently identified also with the much larger size of the lung thought to be the reason.

Frequently a diagnosis is not made till there are huge quantities of the growths within the pleura. As a secondary cancer pleura mesothelioma may appear from metastasis from the breasts, ovaries or intestinal tract. Lymphoma can also increase the risk of mesothelioma.

Symptoms

Initially the affected individual may complain of chest muscles pain. Frequently the problem is not of chest pain, but rather of shoulder joint or belly pain. The patient can easily become small of breath. coughing develops and stout loss due to anorexia, loss of appetite also can be found. Pleural effusion, fluid on the lungs, is also common with this type of mesothelioma. Often the fluid build up will also be in the abdomen and be a pronounced ascites. Often that accumulation of liquid is the first key issue that the individual has.

Fatigue, anemia and blood in the sputum are also indications of the disease. It is conceivable to really feel a bulk in the stomach and have difficulty with bowel movements.

Blood clots can build in the problematic veins. Low blood sugar and jaundice are listed as signs and symptoms. The individual is also more probable to produce blood clots in the lungs.

Prognosis

Mesothelioma has a bleak diagnosis. Several scientific studies have shown that the typical success rate after positive analysis is about eight months. Other elements additionally are taken into consideration. The general survival rate can be affected by the particular type of mesothelioma cells are present. Biphasic cells have proved to be the cells that will lead to the shorter success time.

Lung Cancer Survival Rate

Lung Cancer Survival Rate

The most common known causes are as follows:

Lung Cancer Survival Rate

Cigarette Smoking

Cigarette smoking is probably the most closely related link to developing lung cancer. A person who smokes two packs or more of cigarettes per day has a one in seven chance of developing lung cancer. Those that smoke one pack of cigarettes per day have a twenty-five times greater chance of developing lung cancer than a non-smoker. In addition, those people that smoke a pipe or cigar have a five times greater chance of developing lung cancer than a non-smoker.

The risk of developing lung cancer increases with the number of cigarettes smoked over your lifetime. Cigarette smoking hurts the cells in your lungs. The moment you stop smoking, your lungs start healing themselves, replacing hurt cells with healthy, normal cells. Your risk of developing lung cancer starts decreasing nearly immediately when you quit smoking. Every year that you do not smoke, your chances of developing lung cancer drop further. By the fifteenth year, your chances of developing lung cancer are about the same as those of a person who has never smoked.

Secondhand Smoke

Also known as passive smoking, people exposed to secondhand smoke on a regular basis will have a higher risk of developing lung cancer, even if they do not smoke themselves. Studies have shown that those who live with a smoker have a 24% greater risk of developing lung cancer than most non-smokers. Doctors estimate that about 3000 lung cancer deaths a year are related to secondhand smoke.

Asbestos Exposure

Exposure to asbestos is another well-known cause of lung cancer and mesothelioma – cancer of the pleural lining of the lungs. Asbestos was widely used in construction and everyday products in the late 1800s through the 1960s. Asbestos separates into fine silica fibers that become trapped in the tissues of the lungs. Mesothelioma is inextricably linked to asbestos exposure. There are no reported cases of mesothelioma in people who were not exposed to asbestos either in the workplace or through their environment. A non-smoker who was exposed to asbestos has a five times greater risk of developing lung cancer than a non-smoker who was not exposed. Smoking increases the risk dramatically – a smoker who was exposed to asbestos has a risk of developing lung cancer that is 50 to 90 times greater than that of a non-smoker.

Radon Gas

It is estimated that about 12% of lung cancer deaths can be attributed to radon gas, a colorless, odorless gas that is a natural byproduct of the decay of uranium. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that as many as 15% of homes in the United States have unsafe levels of radon gas, which will account for 15,000 to 22,000 deaths from lung cancer annually.

Air Pollution

Scientists estimate that as many as 1% of all lung cancer deaths are attributable to air pollution. They believe that prolonged exposure to very polluted air can raise the risks of developing lung cancer to about the levels of a passive smoker.

Foods Said to Increase Survival Rate among Those Exposed to Asbestos

Recently, a research paper authored by a group of investigators at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and Louisiana State University, resurfaced providing details on individuals who have fallen victim to mesothelioma cancer based off of their dietary habits.

The report, which was compiled by a Diet and Mesothelioma taskforce, followed 116 individuals, half of whom had mesothelioma cancer and the other half had been exposed to asbestos but did not develop mesothelioma or other asbestos-related conditions. Both groups had similar incomes and tobacco usage as well as having comparable exposure to asbestos.

According to news reports, the researchers studied the foods consumed by both groups and found the following to be right of dietary habits:

* Individuals who remained cancer-free after exposure to asbestos were found to have eaten nearly twice the amount of locally/homegrown vegetables and fruits as those stricken with mesothelioma.

* Victims of mesothelioma ate more “cake, candy and pie than those who stayed cancer-free.”

* Those consuming what are known as cruciferous vegetables – such as mustard greens, collards, broccoli, turnip greens, cabbage or brussel sprouts – were likely to remain mesothelioma-free even after exposure to asbestos occurred.

While more research is likely needed to verify these results, scientists at the NCI are putting faith into these dietary guidelines. The NCI, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC), Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Government have partnered together to make a campaign on the importance of eating vegetables and fruits to ensure a healthy lifestyle.

Foods to Improve Mesothelioma

The taskforce determined dietary habits had a role in the fight against cancer and several experts have also claimed this; eating certain types of foods, especially when organically grown, will likely decrease the chance of developing mesothelioma cancer for an individual who had endured asbestos exposure. The following are a list of foods found to be beneficial against deadly conditions such as asbestosis or mesothelioma.

* Olives, which contain maslinic and oleanolic acids can promote apoptosis – the death of cancer cells.

* Cabbage is high in glucosinolates (anticarcinogenic compounds), also raw cabbage contains substances to rid the body of carcinogens.

* Flaxseeds are filled with lignans and omega-3 fatty acids – potentially capable of lowering the risk of breast cancer in women and colon cancer among both sexes.

* Raspberries – most berries – are a source of fiber, vitamin C, ellagic acid and selenium.

* Mushrooms, which can block aromatase (breast cancer causing enzymes) and suppress the growth of prostate cancer cells.

* Pumpkin as well as carrots and winter squash all contain high levels of carotenoids and betacarotene.

* Onions contain phenolic compounds that are considered anticancer compounds.

What is Asbestos-Induced Mesothelioma?

Asbestos-induced mesothelioma is an incurable form of cancer that develops after fibrous tissue bundles containing tremolite are inhaled and start to develop cancerous cells on the interior lining of the lungs. Asbestos largely went unregulated for decades while millions of U.S. citizens were at risk for exposure to this silent killer. It was mined from vermiculite and used as an alternative, less-costly and fire-retardant ingredient in insulation.

There are several variations of mesothelioma cancer with pleural malignant mesothelioma considered the most deadly and having the lowest survival rate.

Other Treatments for Increasing Mesothelioma Survival Rate

There are currently no treatments in existence that can cure mesothelioma cancer or any variation of the unfortunate disease. But, scientists and researchers are working continuously to find treatments to decrease the severity of an individual’s symptoms as well as increase the survival rate among victims.

Additionally, scientists keep studying the effects of certain foods and how it affects particular types of cancer. For example, researchers at the NIC within the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) have made a research center, with funding, dedicated to the study of dietary intake and cancer. Another study, which was published in a January 2006 issue of Journal of The American Medical Association, looked at the relationship between consumption of large amounts of omega-3 fatty acids (like those found in fish) and breast, prostate and colorectal cancers.

The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), funded and developed by the government, has developed resources for patients suffering from mesothelioma cancer in order for these individuals to have online access to the most up-to-date clinical trials. Ongoing information for a variety of clinical trials can be found at http://clinicaltrials.gov/.

But, individuals who may be suffering from mesothelioma cancer or any other asbestos-induced condition should not only seek medical attention for their symptoms, but are advised to locate a knowledgeable mesothelioma lawyer who may be able to provide insightful details of a mesothelioma lawsuit. By consulting with a mesothelioma attorney, the potential for being awarded monetary compensation for bills and hurts becomes a reality.

Survival Rate of Mesothelioma

September 6, 2010 by

Survival Rate of Mesothelioma

Individuals between the age group of 50 and 70 years are more likely to get the disease due to the long latency period. But, a survey conducted in 2007 revealed that the disease affects more people between the age group of 30 to 40. Based on industry and occupation, statistics indicate that people working in industries such as construction, railroad, shipyard, manufacturing and automobile industries are likely to be exposed to asbestos, with the construction industry having about 1.3 million people being exposed to asbestos.

The statistics on the study of mesothelioma also indicates that the life expectancy of people with the disease to be at least one year. But, with early detection and aggressive mesothelioma treatment, the life expectancy may increase up to two to five years. Studies also indicate mesothelioma can be a silent killer as the symptoms associate with the disease lies inactive in the body for very long periods ranging between ten to fifty years. As symptoms are likely to appear only in the later stages of the disease, this reduces the survival chances of the patient.

Mesothelioma Survival Rates

The disease is hard to detect as symptoms take the form of a simple upset stomach or simple breathlessness. As result, the disease is already in an advanced stage when finally diagnosed. This leaves them with just over a year left to live at this stage in spite of getting the best treatment possible.

Even though mesothelioma statistics have shown that it has been active over the past 100 years, records of the average survival rate of patients’ dates back to just 20 years. The study also revealed that the survival period for this type of cancer is within one to five years following a diagnosis. For those diagnosed between 1998 and 2002, the survival chance for these individuals is about 9%. Some of the factors that affects mesothelioma survival rate are:

The early detection of the disease The complexity of the disease Size of the tumor If the tumor can be removed via surgery The quantity of fluid in the chest or abdomen The age and general health of the patient The type of cancer cells

For the pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma, the survival rate is under a year. But, mesothelioma specialists believe that the survival period is longer despite findings derived via clinical trails. According to various medical literatures, the average survival rate is between 4 to 18 months. The survival rate for people diagnosed and treated in the earlier stages of the disease is not very clear and the timeframe can differ from person to person.

Mesothelioma Research

Extensive Mesothelioma research is undertaken by many organizations. Various companies using asbestos are also initiating their own research. This is because more and more people diagnosed with the disease are seeking compensation, and has resulted in these companies paying out huge amounts of money. The National Institute of Cancer is also conducting continuous mesothelioma research on the cause, symptoms, diagnosis as well as the cure and treatment of the disease.

Due the increase in demand for representation of patients seeking compensation, many law firms are also conducting their own research to know more about the disease. Drug companies, research groups, and government organizations with the hope of bringing about a cure for the disease as well ways of increasing the survival rate among the patients usually provide funding for ongoing research.

Mesothelioma Survival Rate Facts

Mesothelioma is a honestly new type of cancer that is very serious and life threatening, as with most types of cancer.  One thing that makes mesothelioma such a serious condition is that it is usually not found until the late stages of the cancer, causing the survival rate to be low.  This is because the symptoms don’t usually arise until the late stages.

By this time the patient most likely doesn’t have much longer to live.  Studies show most patients who are diagnosed with mesothelioma have a year or less left to live.  Along with diagnosis being hard and delayed, mesothelioma is also honestly uncommon and we are still learning more about the disease.

But, some studies show that one out of every ten mesothelioma patients will live up to three years after diagnosis and one out of every twenty people will live five years after diagnosis.

Studies are performed daily and new clinical trials are helping to increase the survival rate of those with mesothelioma. Survival rates vary depending on where the study is performed, and who is performing the study.  In general, studies are very close in comparison.

Survival rates are based on several different factors.  Some of these factors are, the size of the tumor, the stage the patient is in, whether the tumor can be completely removed with surgery, the quantity of fluid in the chest and abdomen and how long it took to diagnose the cancer.

Some other fascinating facts about mesothelioma survival rates are that the average age of the patients who are diagnosed with mesothelioma are sixty one years of age and eighty one percent were male.

As said before, many studies are performed daily to find new ways to prolong the survival rate of those who have mesothelioma.  Many studies have already proven to do just that.  Lots of studies show that chemotherapy greatly increases the survival rate of those with mesothelioma.  So, although this is a newer and less common cancer we are learning more about it daily.

With our learning we’ll eventually come up with more options of treatment and this will lead to an all together higher survival rate.
